Waiver Wire Pickups - Week 15

Lots of QB's to cover, although none of them are that appealing...

QUARTERBACKS

Trent Edwards, BUF - Slightly Recommended. Edwards threw 4 TD's on Sunday, but let's not forget; it was against the frickin Dolphins! He has another nice matchup in Week 15 against CLE, but I'd still be hesitant to start him...

Sage Rosenfels, HOU - Not Recommended. Nice showing in a win over the Bucs, but it sounds like Schaub may be back in Week 15, so I wouldn't bother with Sage...

Todd Collins, WAS - Not Recommended. Going into last week's game against CHI, Collins had thrown 27 passes in the past 6+ seasons. Does this guy have the best job in football or what? He should do fine in relief of Campbell, but I wouldn't want him anywhere near my team at this point...

Tavaris Jackson, MIN - Slightly Recommended. It looks like MINN may have a QB after all, as Jackson has been solid for the past 4 weeks, completing almost 75% of his throws. I wouldn't pick him up unless it was a keeper league, as he is someone to keep an eye on for next season...

Brock Berlin/Shaun Hill/Kyle Orton, STL/SF/CHI - Not Recommended. Pass...

RUNNING BACKS

Samkon Gado, MIA - Not Recommended. Gado played well in the loss to BUF, with 2 rushing TD's and 4.3 YPC. However, he faces BAL and NE in the next two weeks, so even if he gets the start over the injured Jesse Chatman, he'll struggle to equal those numbers in the two games combined...

Darius Walker, HOU - Recommended. Finally, a guy worth recommending! The undrafted rookie from Notre Dame saw his first action of the year, and had 81 total yards on 22 touches against a tough TB defense. This week the rookie gets to face DEN, who is far worse at stopping the run (although not if you ask Kolby Smith). If Dayne is out for an extended period of time, this is the guy to use your waiver spot on if you need a RB...

T.J. Duckett, DET - Not Recommended. Duckett broke one off for a 32 yard TD run in the loss to DAL on Sunday. However, the rest of the game he had 28 yards on 8, which is about what I'd expect from him going forward for the rest of the season...

Lorenzo Booker, MIA - Not Recommended. See Gado, Samkon.

DeDe Dorsey, CIN - Not Recommended. Joseph Addai owners remember Dorsey as being his handcuff for a short time during the preseason. Dorsey resurfaced with CIN, and had 81 yards rushing in the win over STL. However, he only had 4 touches, with one going for 45 yards. With Rudi and Watson ahead of him on the depth chart, he's not worth a spot on your roster...

Aaron Stecker, NO - Recommended. You've already heard that Bush is likely out for the year, so if you own Bush and didn't own Stecker already and you're still alive, pick him up. If not, I'm sure you have better options on your roster already, as I'm not a huge fan of Stecker, even with the 100 yard game against the hapless Falcons Monday night...

WIDE RECEIVERS

Anthony Gonzalez, IND - Highly Recommended. Gonzalez had his best game as a pro in Sunday’s win at Baltimore, grabbing six passes for 134 yards and scoring the first two touchdowns of his career. Gonzalez has shown signs of breaking out – he had a 100-yard game two weeks ago at Atlanta and had a touchdown called back last week against Jacksonville. There is a lot to like about Gonzalez – he has decent size and excellent speed to go along with above average hands. Marvin Harrison (knee) still does not appear ready to play so Gonzalez should start for at least one more week and with Peyton Manning and the Colts offense currently in sync, the rookie from Ohio State is highly recommended if available.

Jabar Gaffney, NE - Recommended. Gaffney has been super productive over his last three games with 14 receptions for 217 yards and three touchdowns. Gaffney was used as the team’s fourth receiver earlier in the season, but has been stealing playing time from Donte Stallworth as of late. In last week’s win over Pittsburgh in which Gaffney recorded a season-high seven catches for 122 yards, Stallworth played only 32 of 57 offensive snaps compared to 42 for Gaffney. Tom Brady seems to have confidence in the veteran wide receiver, hooking up with Gaffney on the game-winning touchdown in the final minute of a comeback victory at Baltimore on December 3. Believe it or not Gaffney is the type of player that could help you win a fantasy championship but because he is not a starter, you should proceed with caution. At the very least, Gaffney is worth a pickup if still available on your waiver wire because the Patriots have no intention on running the ball and Brady should throw 7-10 touchdowns over the final three games.

Michael Jenkins, ATL - Slightly Recommended. Jenkins had a season-high nine receptions for 83 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown, in Monday’s loss to New Orleans. Surprisingly, Jenkins has been somewhat productive since Chris Redman has taken over at quarterback, catching a pair of touchdowns from the veteran quarterback in roughly six quarters of action. Jenkins is a big and physical receiver that has never lived up to his first round status and Roddy White is still the main man in the team’s passing game so it would be foolish to go overboard for Jenkins. But as long as Redman is the starter for Atlanta, it appears that Jenkins will get more looks.

Jerheme Urban, ARI - Not Recommended. Urban exploded in Sunday’s loss at Seattle, hauling in a career-high six receptions and 123 yards with a touchdown. Urban received more playing time because Anquan Boldin (toe) missed the game and Larry Fitzgerald (groin) was hobbled throughout. Just the team’s fourth receiver, Urban outplayed Bryant Johnson (one catch for a five-yard touchdown) and could earn more offensive snaps over the last couple of games. But unless Fitzgerald and Boldin are completely out of commission or you are in the deepest of leagues, do not bother with a player that did not even see the field last season while on Dallas’ practice squad.

Derek Hagan, MIA - Not Recommended. Hagan started for Marty Booker (knee) in Sunday’s loss at Buffalo and responded by posting a career best in receptions and yardage with eight and 93, respectively. Hagan was supposed to be one of Miami’s go-to wide receivers when the team traded Chris Chambers to San Diego in October, but things have not worked out for the second-year player. Entering Sunday’s game, Hagan had just 16 catches for 198 yards and a touchdown. Hagan has some of the necessary skills (size and leaping ability) to succeed in the league, but he has dropped a bunch of passes this year and the Dolphins have struggled as an offense in general. At this point in the season, there really is not much reason to pick up Hagan unless you are in a deep dynasty league and looking for a sleeper for next year.

TIGHT ENDS

Robert Royal, BUF - Not Recommended. Royal caught three passes for 46 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns in Sunday’s win over Miami, but he is not recommended unless your league starts multiple tight ends. The reasons are simple - Royal had just one touchdown entering Sunday’s game and has not produced much as a pass catcher with 21 receptions for 208 yards through 13 games. Buffalo has talked about getting the tight ends more involved in the offense and Trent Edwards does like to dink and dunk, but it’s hard to get excited about a guy that has not been a factor in most games this season.
